Inside Technology
Technology has made a great impact on us once it really started to grow and it has made us “humans” very dependable on it. It seems that we now can’t go a day without having to interact with technology, no matter from where or what it is. Technology is used by humans all the time, for example we use our smartphones, smart TVs, tablets, computers, and even in our cars. There is a positive and a negative side to technology, technology has made life much easier, we are able to access files, information, pictures and be able to connect with anyone online with just our smartphones. It has made the process of getting information across much faster and it has made things more convenient for people because they can access anything whenever they want. Of course there is also a negative side to technology and Tim Wu, who wrote “As Technology Gets Better, Will Society Get Worse?” and Nicholas Carr, who wrote, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” talk about how technology has affected us so much in our daily lives and it is changing the way we will.
As technology keeps growing and evolving into our lives it finds ways of affecting us as humans. We humans have grown to depend on the use of technology to do pretty much anything, we have let it control us. It is not only affecting us, but also the new generations of children that are being born to the technology around them. We are reliable on technology so much that reported by Carr, “that people typically read no more than one or two pages of an article or book before they would “bounce” out to another site”(Carr 3). This is true rather than reading the book people just search on what the book is about online or instead of picking up a actual book they just read it off their phones or tablets. Not only is technology affecting us but it also makes our lives a bit more cautious, since our information is online now and anyone with the skills can access it without anyone knowing.
Not only is technology making us “lazy” or unreliable without access to technology, but it is also affecting our health. According to Wu and his research, “since the arrival of new technologies, the population has suffered a massive increase in morbid obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes” (Wu 2). This comes to show and proves to us that technology could be a distraction and problem. Not only is it affecting adults but also children and it is increasing the obesity population for children. Technology is not only responsible for the illness of people but also idleness, alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide, they have reached some of the highest levels on earth.
Technology isn’t always a bad thing, according to Laurel Storm in her article, Positive effects on communication, “technology has made a strong impact on the way society communicates” (Storm 1). Technology has brought people around the world closer because it is much faster and easier to communicate to someone. Many family members are able to easily communicate to other relatives that are in their home country or another part of the world. With the new technologies that have been arriving within the last few years it has helped us better develope medication or do further research on the ways of helping others. The access to more information has been much easier since its only now at the tip of our fingers. Before the arrival of technology, people would actually have to go to a library and check out many different books, but now with search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing , etc… it has made it easier to search find the information you need.
It also has made it a safer place to live in now, with all the new high tech security systems people are able to rest safely in their homes without the worry of something happening or feeling unsafe. Not only are homes, but also our streets are safer since there is more surveillance around us. Technology can be looked at through so many different ways there are plenty of negative things about the new technologies but there is as well many positive things about it, but it has made our lives much easier, we as humans have to make sure to take control and not let technology take control of us.

There was good balance between the pros and cons for technology. Also a good use of quotes to back up each point. However, your thesis should be clear. It seems as if you are back and forth on technology. There should be a clearer stand without having the reader guess what your claim is.
ReplyDeleteYou do a good job presenting both sides of the argument. It is true that technology has brought people around the world closer together, and improved technology has helped further research regarding. The reality though is that technology has brought upon negatives over the years. You do a good job presenting examples for both sides.
ReplyDeleteIt is very dangerous to asume that technology is causing factorof alcoholoism adn drug addictions without a clear evidence. Also, technology has helped many peole get connected with their fmailies around teh world, but it has also separested many more livingunder the same roof. For example, during dinner, many fmailes are atatched to their cellphones and hardly communicate with eachother. The only thing that saves technology from being all evil are the medical tools in place to save lifes as mentioned in the post.
ReplyDeleteThe last sentence of your piece, "We as humans have to make sure to take control and not let technology take control of us" is the key to allowing technology be completely successful for everyone. People must learn that too much of anything can be bad for you, its all about moderation. Only then will technology not affect living in a negative. You included the idea that technology can be many different things like making a home a safer place to be and having extra surveillance on the streets. It is constantly said that technologies positives are making things faster accessible and in general having an easier way of living. But many fail to see that one of the greatest things technology has provided us with is a safer environment. It is often over looked because were so focused on technology being phones and internet, but its so much more than that. Great point bring that one up!
